THE EIGHTY PERCENT

On empty rooms, a river restored, and what sustained attention actually builds

🌑 NEW MOON IN VIRGO | SEPTEMBER 10, 2026

The New Moon lands in Virgo tonight, at 18 degrees — the first lunation since March that hasn't been an eclipse. After a summer of things breaking open, this one is quieter. Virgo doesn't ask for a big vision. It asks how you're going to structure your Thursday.

The house has been quiet since my daughter left for school. Not sad-quiet. Structural-quiet. Eighteen years of a household built around a child's rhythms — the school pickup, the practice schedule, the small daily architecture of another person's becoming — and now that architecture is visible in a way it never was while I was living inside it. Virgo season always asks me to look at what I've built. This year it's asking me to look at what's left standing now that the reason for half of it is gone.

My mentor and teacher Sherri Mitchell writes about something she calls the 80-10-10 rule.

Ten percent goes to seeing clearly — looking honestly at what's here, what's causing harm, what needs to change.

Another ten percent goes to holding the line — protecting what matters, refusing what doesn't.

The remaining eighty percent goes to building. Not managing the wreckage. Not standing guard over what's wrong or in despair over all that is lost, destroyed or broken. Building, with our full attention, the reality we actually want to live inside.

I've spent a lot of years mistaking the first twenty for the whole job. Noticing what's broken and standing guard over it feels like work. It can even feel righteous. But the eighty is where the future actually gets made. Everything else is maintenance around the edges of a life someone else is still building.

This summer I watched what the eighty percent looks like at scale. The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust — my own small mountain town's land trust, an organization that fits in one small office — spent the last year and a half raising $62 million with three partner organizations to permanently protect 78,000 acres of the Magalloway watershed. This summer it closed. Over 500,000 acres now connected, corner to corner, from western Maine into New Hampshire (and almost 2 million acres if we include the stretch into Canada). Brook trout streams that will run clean for people not yet born.

I think about what it would do to us — to our sense of what's possible — if that were the headline thay we saw on all of our news feeds. A small land trust, a vital river ecosystem restored, $62 million raised because we refused to look away from what we so deeply desired to conserve. We become what we keep our attention on.

That's the eighty percent. Not so much about a single dramatic act but sustained, deliberate attention, day after day. It's the only thing that actually holds.

I think about this in terms of thought, speech, action — what I let circulate in my mind on an ordinary afternoon, what I say out loud about my own house and my own becoming, what my hands actually do with the hours I've been given back. That's the vibrational reality I'm building or failing to build, one unremarkable day at a time.

This is the terrain of the 40 Days of Ancestral Gold practice I'm opening this fall — Fridays at 10am Pacific, October 9 through November 20. We'll spend the seven weeks with verse eleven of Sri Sukta, where the prayer asks Lakshmi not simply to visit, but to abide — to take up residence in the family, in the lineage. To stay. That's the eighty percent in one line of ancient Sanskrit: not a moment of grace summoned and hoped to hold, but a “home” built sturdy enough for something to actually live in, across generations.

🌑 PRACTICE FOR THE NEW MOON:

Take a sheet of paper — Virgo wants your hand moving.

Left side: what's been pulling your ten-and-ten this week — what you've been watching, what you've been guarding against.

Right side: one sentence for what you're building instead.

Fold the paper. Read only the right side back to yourself.

“Where has ten percent quietly become eighty? What would it take to reverse that ratio this season?”

🔥‍ ‍THIS NEW MOON ASKS:

What are you building, in the rooms that have gone quiet — that something could actually come home to?
