THE SMALL FIRE
On containment, clarity, and the sweetness of a flame held close.
🌕 FULL MOON IN ARIES | SEPTEMBER 26, 2026
This week I've been lighting the smallest candle I own. It burns for exactly ten minutes. I light it early, before the lists begin, and I sit with it until it goes out.
The lists are long right now. In five days, thirteen women arrive at Rangeley Lake for The Self-Illumined Heart. There are rooms to prepare, instruments to set up, and five days to hold in my body before anyone walks through the door.
The name of the retreat comes from a line in the Katha Upanishad I've carried for years. It describes the Self as a being the size of a thumb, dwelling in the heart, jyotir ivādhūmakaḥ, like a flame without smoke. Of every image available to the sages, they chose a small, steady, smokeless light and placed it in the heart.
Aries fire wants the leap and the blaze. This fall I'm learning to be with its other side. I've been sharing sound and ceremony more regularly at the seasonal thresholds, the equinoxes and solstices, and letting those turning points set the rhythm.
One of the first fire practices in the Himalayan tradition is trāṭaka, steady gazing at a flame. You rest your eyes on it until they want to close. Then you close them and find its image glowing at the space between the brows, and you stay there until it fades. The smaller the flame, the steadier it holds. A tall flame flickers with every draft and pulls the eyes around with it. A small one lets them settle.
Ten minutes is a small container. Because I know when the flame will end, I can give it all of my attention while it lasts. A fire with edges, fed deliberately, gives a clearer light. That's where the clarity has been coming from this season.
What I love most is how alive such a small flame is. It leans with my breath. It sways when I shift my weight. Sitting this close to it feels sweet, like keeping company with something very young. Tending it asks for a softer kind of attention, the kind you'd give anything that would go out if you breathed on it too hard. The radiance is all there, only closer.
I've been thinking about small fires at a larger scale, too. This summer the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust closed the Magalloway project, 78,000 acres of forest and river permanently protected by an organization you could fit in one office. This month I am also preparing to be interviewed for Nature Conservancy magazine about what makes Rangeley so singular, about the power of rural place-making, and about the opportunity in front of us now to conserve and restore another 150,000 acres of woods and waters around these lakes. Answering those questions, I kept returning to one image: a handful of people in a small town, tending something steadily for years, until it lights up a whole region.
That's the kind of fire we'll keep in 40 Days of Ancestral Gold, the donation-based practice I'm opening with Amie Heeter on October 9. Fridays at 10am Pacific through November 20, one steady practice kept together week after week as the year turns toward the dark. If you've been wanting a container for this kind of work, here’s the invitation.
🌕 PRACTICE FOR THE FULL MOON:
Tonight, or any night this weekend while the moon is full, light one small candle and give yourself ten minutes. Set it on a steady surface at arm's length, level with your eyes, away from drafts.
Sit comfortably and rest your gaze on the flame, just above the wick. Blink when you need to. When your eyes grow heavy or begin to water, close them and look for the glow between your brows. Stay with it until it fades, then open your eyes and begin again. On the last round, let the light drift down from your brow into the center of your chest, and rest your hand there.
“What small flame is asking for more tenderness this season?”
“What container would let it burn steadily as we descend into winter’s darkness?”
🌱 THIS FULL MOON ASKS:
What is the smallest flame you could keep,
and keep well,
all the way through the dark months?
With you in the fullness,
